Mutineer National Championship 2008 - Boat Measurement
All Mutineers participating in MNC 2008 will be measured.
Several builders have built the Mutineer over the years. Therefore Chrysler Mutineer, TMI Mutineer, Starwind 15, Gloucester 15, Cardinal Mutineer, and Nickels Mutineer sailboats shall be entitled to race as Mutineer sailboats and shall be entitled to race in all Mutineer Class Association Regattas.
For exact dimensions and a complete text of the Mutineer 15 Class Association Racing Rules, visit the MCA website at:
http://www.mutineer15.org/racingrules.html
The following items will be included in the MNC measurement and inspection:
I. Safety Equipment:
- PFD's
- Paddle
- Anchor and 100' of minimum 3/16" line
- Hand Bailer, (minimum 2 quart capacity)
- Hatch covers, inspection ports, openings in the vertical bulkhead, and any deck openings aside from a spinnaker launching snout.
- Positive flotation
Hatch covers are required to participate in the racing. There will be no exceptions made.
Positive flotation is required. Original manufacturer foam is acceptable as long as it is intact. Other types of flotation will be allowed as long as they provide a minimum of 240 pounds of positive flotation. Acceptable types are “pool noodles”, poured foam, loose closed-cell foam, air bags, and plastic bottles with caps. If there is no positive flotation or the original manufacturer foam is not intact the measurer will determine the amount of additional positive flotation that is required to meet the 240 pound minimum. For a boat with zero positive flotation, 20 pool noodles are required to achieve 240 pounds positive flotation.
II. Hull:
- inspect for changes to original design shape
- inspect for unsafe defects.
Some examples of unsafe defects are loose chainplates, missing drain plug, hole in hull, and severe cracks in hull.
III. Spars:
- mast and boom for OME extrusions
- racing bands on mast and boom
- height of spinnaker halyard block above deck
- spinnaker pole length
If mast or boom have been replaced, they will be checked to confirm the new spar dimensions are consistent with the OME extrusions.
If there are no racing bands on the spars, ones will be added with black plastic tape.
The maximum height of the spinnaker halyard block from the deck next to the mast to the upper edge of the sheave is 192 inches (16 feet)
IV. Rigging:
- wire diameter
- any unsafe defects
Some examples of unsafe defects are rivets missing from tangs, "scored" or partially cut wire rope, and undersized clevis pins.
V. Foils
- rudder length, width, thickness, and fairing
Centerboards will not be inspected.
VI. Sails:
Main:
- luff, foot, leech dimensions
- roach by inspection
- battens
- weight of cloth
Jib:
- luff, foot, leech dimensions
- roach by inspection
- weight of cloth
Spinnaker:
- luff, foot, and mid-girth dimensions
- weight of cloth
Main and jib roach will only be measured if visual inspection shows excessive roach.
There will be some latitude in sail dimensions for older sails which have stretched.
VII.Weight:
Boats will be weighed as specified in the Mutineer 15 Racing Rules.
